Becoming an Animal Care and Welfare Apprentice

L2 Animal Nursing Assistant Certificate:

The level 2 Animal Care & Welfare apprenticeship is 15 months part-time offered as blended learning or correspondence (blended learning - average of 1 day’s college attendance required every 6 weeks). This qualification is designed for candidates seeking a specialised qualification to enhance their existing contribution in the workplace. The overall aim of the course is to prepare candidates for a career in animal care or Veterinary Nursing, based within a Veterinary practice.

The apprenticeship course content is assessed through assignments, portfolio and practical examinations and students have to undertake an oral examination as part of the apprenticeship requirements. There is no minimum academic entry requirement for this course, but each candidate must be in either:

  • Full-time (35 hours or more per week) employment in a Veterinary Practice (not necessarily and RCVS Training Practice).
  • Or Part-time (20 hours or more per week) employment in a Veterinary Practice (not necessarily an RCVS Training Practice).
  • Please note, there is a requirement to be in a patient contact role and to have the consent of their employer to make the application

Progression

Students who successfully complete the course may progress to RCVS Veterinary Nursing Diploma Level 3 if employed in a suitable RCVS Training Practice. Students will also require qualifications in Mathematics and English either at GCSE above C or level 2 functional skills equivalent plus 2 other GCSEs above grade C or 4-9
